Mary asks…
I’m 46 and have been diagnosed bipolar. My past job history has been unstable and I haven’t had a career.?
I do stress easily sometimes and know I can’t handle a real stressful job. My mom said to me, “you can’t handle a job and need to get on disability, you deserve it”. I told her I was thinking about getting training in the medical field in billing and coding or as a medical assistant. Again, she said I can’t handle a job. She lives with my sister that is 12 years younger than me and successful. On Thanksgiving, I told my sister I was thinking about going to school in the medical field. She blurted out “I don’t know why you don’t just temp”. I told her that’s how I got my last job and got laid off and I’ve been laid off twice. She said she’s been laid off twice too. What is bothering me is the lack of support from my mother and my sister who is usually right may be right, but no support there either. I feel like no one is supporting me period. My mom thinks my sister hung the moon and mom never gave me support when I was growing up. How do I handle them? Thanks

Wow Teresa I am in a bit of the same boat (well sort of, not quite). I am 44 and schizophrenic. I have two degrees but have never been able to work up to my premorbid functioning. I have always had menial jobs, bad jobs mostly. Now finally I have realized since my husband lost his business I am going to have to acknowledge I am too impaired to work anymore. I can’t drive far anymore and am losing a lot of memory function and my confusion is getting worse, SO I have applied for disability. But see I know what is bothering you – it feels like a surrender. There is however a difference with schizophrenia and bi polar. Bi polar is a mood disorder – you don’t lose cognitive function. If your moods can be stabilized with medication then you are good to go! I admire your ambition about medical billing etc. It is one field that is growing and jobs I believe are available. Ignore Mom and sister. How would they cope with what you cope with? Probably not well. You are strong and can do this! Good luck hun.

Donna asks…
can i rejoin the army with a re-3 code discharge..it was honerable under medical unable to perform?
i dislocated my knee cap in basic training and i couldn’t complete the pft but that has been 5 years ago and ive heard i can rejoin and then i heard i cant rejoin..im wanting to get back in but don’t know what steps to take if i can get back in
they also gave me an EPTS since they seen my civilian records and i had it documented showing a hyperextention to my knee when i was younger..so i dont know if they put that into consideration when they gave me the discharge or not

Sandra answers:
Go see a recruiter. That’s the one you should ask and not here because it’s all opinions here. You can always get a waiver. It might be a little tough now because the Army is about 50,000 over strength.

Mandy asks…
How hard is it to get back into the Navy with and RE-4 code?
I was in basic training for a week yes only a week and I got kidney stones while I was there. When the military looked into my medical record they found that I had at one time been treated for PTSD, depression, and a sleeping disorder. Aparent miss diagnosis. When I mentioned this to my recruiter he said not to worry about it I wasnt currently being treated for it so it wouldnt matter. This recruiter is now involved in an investigation for second degree sexual assault and sexual battery. go figure. anyway the reason the military looked into my medical record was because of the stones and they disscharged me with a fraudulant inlistment because of the ptsd and depression how can i change this? I still want to be in the Navy.

Sandra answers:
Check the RE and Discharge codes on line to find out if you should try.
