You definitely could get a degree in each of those fields, but that would be a lot of work and money and I don’t know if that would be worth it for you.

It might be better to do a job search in each of those fields and read the job descriptions to see which one sounds best for you. Think about the qualities and skills that each of them require. If there’s one that stands out as being a good fit for you (good salary, the right set of skills, the job interests/challenges you) – then you can start looking at a school where you can get your degree for that particular area.

Because you also want to get training in other areas like communication, I would recommend you find a local community or state college where you can major in healthcare but take electives to get training in your other areas if interest. It would also allow you to take a few different healthcare classes in your above mentioned fields (Med Assistance, Office Admin, Billing and Coding) to see which one you like the best.

Good luck!

Hi Demari,

I suggest that you visit a local Medical Practice or Hospital and ask to speak with the Administrator or Matron. They should be able to set you on the right track and provide you with guide-lines so that you may make a wise choice.

Don’t put yourself down about communication – you have communicated your request for information quite well in your letter above. I realize that you may be referring to verbal communication and we could all improve on that.

Very best wishes for your career.

what is wrong with me!?

i am a dreppressed person and i’m on fluoxetine and seroquel for depression, insomnia, anxiety.

i had a though childhood so all my life i had to deal with stress. i have been under pressure since i was 3 yrs old. i’m sure about the age cause i remember some bad stuff that happenned to me at that age.
now that i’m 32 i don’t seem to know how to handle stresss or pressure. whenever i’m in a stressful situation the only thing i can think of is runnnig away and there are things that you can’t run away from no matter what you do is facing it at that point my only thought is diying.

what botters me the most is the fact that i’m affraid of working. i’m so affraid of the work environment, of the everyday pressure it causes. that’s why i don’t have much work experience. for those who might think that i’m lazy. i did try to find a solution to my fear. i thought that if i go to school maybe the work enviroment tha i was going to be will be less stressful but i was wrong after graduation not only i had no luck of finding a job in my field which is ” medical billing and coding” for not having any expereince but i also was so affraid fo working. but still i would not give up cause i don’t mind working hard so i tried to open a home daycare i had all the training for but since i have bad credit i couldn’t buy a house nor rent one. so now i’m stuk. i would do anything to be normal. i envy not only those who wake up in the morning enjoying going to work and those who dont’ enjoy it but still do it. i feel like i’m trappe. my mind is like in jail and i can’t get out of that fear. so financially and emotionnally i’m struggling. is there anybody who has the same fear? i would feel better if iknow that i’m not the only one.
thank you all for your response but i wanted to tell yogi that i’m not looking for excuxes when i say that i had a tough childhood. you have no idea what i’ve been through so you can’t judge me and i’m only trying to understand myself and solve the issue. i was on therapy for a few months but had to stop cause my insurance got cancelled. so now i’m on my own and can’t live with my situation anymore. it’s either i give up or i find help or solutions.

I can assure you that you are not the only one. I, too, have had a rough upbringing. Everything began at the age of 3, for me as well. Stress and pressure are the reasons I am taking Zoloft and Wellbutrin! Those meds seem to at least keep things under wraps… I don’t really have panic attacks anymore, but I DO still go through the stress every day. Many many many times I have had to call someone so I did not kill myself. I hurt myself often (biting my arm, hitting my head against the wall, using tools to bruise myself). It’s almost like… If I feel the pain physically, maybe I won’t feel it emotionally…? I don’t know. All I can tell you is that there is ALWAYS hope. I truly believe that. I have been there– I used to be deathly afraid of social situations. I was teased and tortured horrendously throughout grade school by my peers. There were maaaaaany days that I thought everyone would be better off if I just was dead. I guess it was a comfort, always knowing I had that option. But, I can tell you now, now that I am past the worst of it (hopefully) that trying to make it through, even if it makes you collapse at the end of the day, it’s worth it. There are always people out there– counselors, nice strangers who smile as you walk by them, random people on yahoo answers…
Good for you for not giving up. I think that’s great. Have faith in yourself, and know that there is always something that can be done.
Maybe find a fabulous counselor or person you can really connect with and talk to (that’s what REALLY helped me out). I think building confidence is the first step in moving forward. As far as the credit issue goes, I am sure there are professionals online or by phone who can help you. I wish you the best of luck, whoever you are… You will be in my thoughts!

can a registered medical assistant claim to be a nurse in Texas?

I’m a nurse and I until my license came in I had to say graduate nurse. Under Texas code 301.002 it states that a “nurse” must hold a license (be it professional or vocational). So legally can a RMA state that they are a nurse? I’m only asking because the doctor I see only has RMAs in his office and all claim the title of a nurse though when it came to breaking potentially bad news to me there was no compassion for one and secondly I was told over the phone. Where as a nurse we are trained to tell people in a way that we can provide emotional support! Where was my empathy? Who does this get turned into the medical assistant association or the Texas Board of Nursing???

No, it is illegal to do so, and they could be prosecuted or at least, reprimanded for doing so. Report the situation to your state Board of Nursing if you think the infractions are serious enough. The seriousness depends on how much, “nursing,” they are actually doing.

Embellish skills on resume? Or not?

I am 20. Started working at a local deli in 04 – 05. Worked at Walmart 9/05 – 12/05. Only left because I became pregnant & as a part time cashier I couldn’t stand up all day with morning sickness etc… Was out of work until now. Basically I have excellent computer skills (from school), excellent customer service skills (from work), average supervisory skills (well I was a teacher for ages 3-4; THAT’S WORK lol), and I am in school for medical billing and coding. I have always been into learning new things, and catch on to what ever I am taught quickly. At my last job, I was thrust into a dept I had no experience in, trained for 3 HOURS and was put by myself! The next day I was TRAINING a new asociate! I recieved high praises, but that was not widely displayed, so I don’t think I can include that. But I KNOW that if put into an assistant manager or supervisory position, I will learn it all and do it well. But how can I get that with so little JOB experience? I have done a lot in school.
And I have excelled in school (Distinguished Honors). In addition, I need to make a good amount of money ($11+ hr) so that I can keep up my household. I live in Chester, PA, not too much opportunity, no car (need the good job to get one), and moving in 2 days (same city, different part) !!! I need this!!! HELP!!!
I don’t mean put anything I never did – just how to word my actual accomplishments.

Sandra answers:

You have many excellent accomplishments that will impress a future employer. You need only find a way to get the truth across in your resume.

If I’m understanding you correctly, you are completing training in medical billing and coding and you are hoping to acquire an assistant managerial or supervisory position in that field? To be honest, I don’t know if you can realistically expect a supervisory job right out of school, but you don’t have anything to lose by trying for it.

This is what I would do. I would create a hybrid resume. This is one that combines your skills and abilities with your work history. You wil word each entry in such a way as to showcase your achivements in that area.

So, something like this;

1. Name, Contact Information

2. Objective: To acuire an assistant manager or supervisory position in a thriving medical records environment.

3. Education

4 Skills and Abilities

a. Customer Service Skills
– acquired through employment in the retail industry. Received excellent performance reviews regarding my ability to serve the public in a friendly, professional and courteous manner.

B. Computer Skills.
– acquired through academic training Demonstrated ability in (name software applicatons, etc.)

c. Teaching Skills
– acquired through teaching children ages three to four. Demonstrated communicaton skills, provided support and encouragement, offered feedback land guidance leading to behavior change.

D. Ability to Learn Quickly and Adapt to New Situations
– Functioned independently in a new department after three hours training. Provided training to new associate entering the team.

5. Work History. Make this brief.

6. Commmunity Involvement and Volunteerism
include this category because it shows you have experience working in a team and that you are a good community minded person. Pay special attention to any volunteer work that shows you did something particularly well and that ability would be useful in the job you are applying for

7. Awards and Recognition. Include any that are appropriate

In your accompanying cover letter, sum up the qualities you have that would make you ideal for this job. Just state them plainly as you did in this Yahoo! Post and let your accomplishments speak for themselves.

Good luck.

re-enlisting in the army, prior USAF, medical discharge 2Q?

So I was in the Air Force for less than a year. My knee was injured during training – laugh it up, I know – “who gets hurt in the AF?” Right? Well I was in the 342nd, which is a little different. Anyway, I was told that I was going to get sent home to heal up, and then I could come back in. My RE code is a 2Q – which is med. discharge/retired. I healed just fine, no surgery. But the 2Q is a no go for all branches especially the AF.

I am working with my 3rd recruiter in 3 years trying to get back in. Right now I have a packet in with the MEPS and am waiting to hear if I can physical again. My fingers are crossed, and I’m hoping for the best.

So my questions are this – has anyone done this before especially with a 2Q RE code? And secondly, when I get back in, what is a good non-combat MOS. No, I’m not afraid of infantry, but I am not going to endanger other peoples lives if my knees goes out again. Chances are slim, but I don’t want to risk it. So I’m looking at the Intel and Aviation mos lists. Perhaps artillery (I know it is a combat mos, but different than a traditional infantryman) – but sorta like my hearing the way it is.

So, to all you lucky enough to be serving – thank you in advance. My ASVAB was a 97, and I have a 4 year college degree – so I should be qualified for any MOS.

Thanks again for any help you can give me.

Australia and English both let gays service in the military, why are we so far behind in human rights?

Since 1993, about 10,000 otherwise qualified servicemembers have been forced out, including those in crucial occupations such as code-breakers, intelligence and medical specialists, air traffic controllers and translators. At a time of tight budgets and stretched-thin forces, the Defense Department has spent $364 million to recruit and train replacements for those discharged, says a blue ribbon panel that includes former Defense secretary William Perry.

The U.S. ban on openly gay servicemembers is an archaic and hurtful assault on people who want only to serve their country. The Supreme Court did what it had to do. Now, it’s Congress’ turn to do what it ought to do and repeal the ban.

Sandra answers:

I find it appalling that Homosexuality was only recently taken out of the DSM… The big book of mental disorders.

I find it appalling that I cant donate blood because im gay. The Red Cross has a ban on any male that has had sexual relations with another man since 1977. Having sex one time in 33 years disqualifies you from ever donating blood.. Amidst huge blood shortages.

I find it appalling that i cant get married.. Or even a civil union.

I find it appalling that religious extremists are out there actively boycotting companies that show equality to gays.

The suicide rate among homosexual teens is the highest proportionally in the entire country. Those bastards are KILLING them.. Killing them with thier “reparative therapy” and hurtful accusations, and outright lies.

EDIT:

I am actually quite suprised by the answers here… Actually suprised!

There seems to be a common misnomer running rampant in the minds of a few of you on here. A gay male isnt some immoral being, with uncontrollable sexual tendencies. I have successfully lived with/showered with/eaten with straight males all throughout college, and yes.. In those tiny tiny dorm rooms.

There are those that seem to think that just because there is a gay male in the room… He is automatically staring at thier crotches… And YES, of course i think there are a lot of straight males out there, and yes i glance at thier asses from time to time.. But, other than that, i keep the romance, and wishful thinking geared towards OTHER gay males.

There is a line that eventually every gay male comes across that a lot of straight males come to also. It is when we become attracted to someone that is not interested, for various reasons, to us. We can either A) press on reguardless, incurring wrath/disgust/criminal charges… OR we learn to let it go, and move on.

A similar situation occurs for Gay males. We have to realize that the “playing field” is a bit limited. Sure.. There are many many males out there… But only a small percentage of them are even like us.

We have to train ourselves to mentally “cross them off the list” before we become attracted. This saves a lot of anger/misunderstanding/criminal charges.

Assuming that we are not in controll of our sexual drive is preposterous. Assuming that we are not mentally capable of being “gay men in a straight society” is a common, hurtful misconception.

Opening up your minds occasionally couldnt hurt

The job is billing & coding for a Medical Billing Facilitiy; I don’t have too much experience because I went to school for medical transcription BUT explained how willing I was to return to school for the additional training (honestly thats all I have for the interview tomorrow)..

So seeing how there are a number of reasons NOT to hire me, I have a huge family, 1 on the way and husband makes a decent living for the 2 of us but not for the 7 of us….(need the job, actually it’s going to be a career).

Thoughts?

Your personality and desire to work are going to need to be MAJOR selling points since your potential employer will know immediately that you are going to be needing time off in a few months. Just address maternity leave head-on. I would not mention that you have a large family as that information is really none of the interviewer’s business.

Work in the Hospital…?

Hello everyone, I just started a job as a ‘Financial Rep’ in the Radiology department in one of the most well known hospitals in Florida. I have an MBA with a Concentration in HR Management, and I am currently working on a degree in Medical Billing and Coding. This medical degree is basically what got me the job, because I changed careers and I have no previous medical work experience, until now. Here is my question…

With just starting out in this field within this hospital, and the idea of my Medical Billing and Coding degree being completed in 2 years, having an MBA degree already, how would I become the Director of Radiology? Or a more thorough thought, how would I become a Director of any area in the hospital? It is Shands hospital, so it has plenty of potential and lots of locations throughout Florida. Please tell me what you think, such as how much experience I may need, more training I may need, more schooling, etc.

Thanks all!

Sandra answers:

Hey there, well I can tell you that it all depends on the job requirements of the hospital or any career. In one hospital even in the same type (both shands but different locations) can have seperate requirements. You may have all the education, which is really good, but they may want expereince, even if the job says education preferrance. Kinda sux but that is how it goes sometimes…Well, hope I can help Hercules! ;P

I’m 46 and have been diagnosed bipolar. My past job history has been unstable and I haven’t had a career.?

I do stress easily sometimes and know I can’t handle a real stressful job. My mom said to me, “you can’t handle a job and need to get on disability, you deserve it”. I told her I was thinking about getting training in the medical field in billing and coding or as a medical assistant. Again, she said I can’t handle a job. She lives with my sister that is 12 years younger than me and successful. On Thanksgiving, I told my sister I was thinking about going to school in the medical field. She blurted out “I don’t know why you don’t just temp”. I told her that’s how I got my last job and got laid off and I’ve been laid off twice. She said she’s been laid off twice too. What is bothering me is the lack of support from my mother and my sister who is usually right may be right, but no support there either. I feel like no one is supporting me period. My mom thinks my sister hung the moon and mom never gave me support when I was growing up. How do I handle them? Thanks

Wow Teresa I am in a bit of the same boat (well sort of, not quite). I am 44 and schizophrenic. I have two degrees but have never been able to work up to my premorbid functioning. I have always had menial jobs, bad jobs mostly. Now finally I have realized since my husband lost his business I am going to have to acknowledge I am too impaired to work anymore. I can’t drive far anymore and am losing a lot of memory function and my confusion is getting worse, SO I have applied for disability. But see I know what is bothering you – it feels like a surrender. There is however a difference with schizophrenia and bi polar. Bi polar is a mood disorder – you don’t lose cognitive function. If your moods can be stabilized with medication then you are good to go! I admire your ambition about medical billing etc. It is one field that is growing and jobs I believe are available. Ignore Mom and sister. How would they cope with what you cope with? Probably not well. You are strong and can do this! Good luck hun.

College confusion???

Im currently at com. college. I have about 5 more classes to go before I get the general education associate degree, which is basically the generic transfer associate degree. I decided to go this route because I was undecided. Ive researched univerisities and possible majors and nothing seems to catch my eye. However I have found a few specialized associate degrees at my current com. college that I think I would enjoy. So what should I do? Should I finish the general AA degree since im so close to being finished and then go for the “training” program. Or should I just go straight for the associate degree that I could essentially get a job in. The two im deciding between are also associate degrees im thinking between Clinical lab technician and medical coding and billing. Im not sure what I should do. Is there any benefit to having two associate degrees.

I’m telling you, get your AA and transfer to a university to get your bachelor. These days, even a bachelor won’t get you a good job. You need to think big and bright for your future. What kind of life would i want to live ten years from now. Do i want to live from paycheck to paycheck for the rest of my life or do i want to make good salary that will support my family and still have extras left in the bank. I use to be in the same situation as yours. When i was almost done with my GE courses at a com. College, i decided to just get my AA and start work. Well luckily, my dad urged me to transfer to a university and i did. I’m a sophomore at UCLA right now, majoring in economics and i’m almost done. There is a famous quote my dad use to always say, “get educated while you’re young because when you’re old you won’t have to work so hard.” ok, i know that didn’t rhyme but my point is try to get at least a masters degree. Trust me you’ll be glad later on in life.

Performance anxiety is nothing new and occurs in many different situations. Once you start working and are satisfied with your performance, your confidence will build, and all this will be history.

Until then, you can practice anxiety/stress reduction techniques: progressive relaxation, exercise, biofeedback, meditation, and creative visualization. The more you practice, the better you get at these.

Can I get a job as a Medical Coder w/o a National Coding Certification?

Due to bad workplace relations- I’m thinking about quitting my job. I’m trying to be a Certified Professional coder which my current job is paying for the exam after I stay 2 yrs while supervising my coding in the meantime but I have to stay a couple of more years under a contract in exchange for them paying for extra training and the actual certification exam for me. However, since I don’t want to stay and I have a year experience do you think that I can get another job that will take me without a CPC license ( all the job posts say certification required though) or can I get lucky again and get a job without a certification since I have 1yr experience in supervised coding (which seems rare to accept nowadays?

FYI: I have a Certified Billing and Coding Specialist certification by the NHA but it’s not recognized like other Certifications like CPC, CCS, etc.

Most employers are now requiring their coders to have both experience and a credential. In the past, one or the other was usually fine. But since with the government cracking down on fraud, waste and abuse, employers now need their coders to have both, plus since this field is over saturated, they have the luxury of being picky.

However, some employers will make exceptions, they will hire you on the condition you become certified within a set amount of time, usually 6 months to a year. Job postings usually include that in the ad. But even if they don’t, I would apply anyways and if you get an interview, I would mention that you intend on sitting for a certification within 6 months, etc.

But since you have an actual year of hands on coding experience, I would imagine you should be able to find a job.

Sometimes when we get too many things on our “stress pile”, it topples over – and you end up stressed out, as you are.

You didn’t say when you’re seeing your psychiatrist, I hope it’s sometime soon. As to how to tell them this is how you’ve been feeling, just print off your question and give it to them – or better yet, take a notepad and make your question into a list, and break it down by school, job market, and your grandmother.

I see a therapist every other week, and I often take lists of things to the sessions to discuss – if nothing else it makes sure I don’t forget the things I want to talk about. It’s a big help!

You could setup a blog or website, this is completely free. Once you have added some good content, you can start to earn money from advertising. I know you wont make a huge income from this, but it would get you started working from home.

Pick a topic which you are very interested in, and write a piece on that everyday.

I would like to know if there is anyone out there that does medical billing and coding from home that doesn’t require a degree. If anyone knows legitimate places where I can do this please respond.

Online medical billing and coding schools are very suspect when it comes to training on the latest medical/billing software since most medical centers have very customized medical software which is not normally shared with trade schools and the like. In the real world of medical billing and coding, training occurs on-the-job. We therefore do not recommend that you subscribe to any online school for medical billing and coding and concentrate on entering a medical internship program at your local medical facility/center for medical billing/coding.

On another subject: the major bulk of medical billing/coding work in the U.S. Has been greatly curtailed by state privacy laws as it pertains to medical records and patient confidentiality. The vast majority of medical records are kept in recordkeeping departments within medical centers and any billing/coding work is done “in-house,” not “outsourced.” So, beware of any offers which promote online at home medical billing/coding work–there are scammers out there.

Advice on Medical Billing/Coding job done from home!?

I am currently 5 months pregnant and work as a bartender. As many women know it is hard enough being a bartender, but add a growing fetus to the situation it 10 times harder. I made a choice to leave the position, so with only 2 weeks left I am considering alternative income sources. Once the baby is born I do not plan on going back to work for awhile.
I am considering Medical Billing/Coding training and it would be a perfect position to get back the additional income I am loosing as well as allow me to be a stay at home mom.
I was looking for some advice from other stay at home “working” moms, or anyone who has advice. I need to know where to start?? Schooling needed, how to find a legit company, and advice on getting started..

Thank you for any and all help.. Wishing all a Happy Holiday and Blessed New Year!!

I am in the medical billing and coding program right now. It is going to take me 3 semesters plus an internship to get my certification. As far as being able to work from home, most places don’t allow you to until you have a certain amount of experience, because the job is pretty hard.

My best advice would be to go to school (you can contact your local community college to find out about the program and financial aid), get a job working for a company (doctor’s office, hospital), and ask them about their work from home policy. A lot of bigger places allow you to work from home after working for them for a certain amount of time (once they know you have the hang of it). The nice thing about that is that you actually work for the company and can have all the benefits of being an employee (health, paid time off, vacation, etc).

Best of luck!

Dear Mr. David. You will need to undergo a Degree Course of the Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) for pursuing a career in Medical Transcription. National American University can be a good school, from where you can get this training.

You can then further also join a Toronto Based Medical Transcription Company, whose name is RPJ Atlantic Technologies, Canada. It’s in the Medical Transcription Industry since 2003.

So Mr. David, all the very best for your career

I recommend that you look into courses and books by Laureen Jandroep and Carol J Buck. I am a certified medical coder and have used both of these study guides to pass my own certification exams. These are also among the most comprehensive texts, manuals and video instructions related to billing & coding.

Need Help With A Medical Billing Question?

front desk vs. back room operations. There are two ways to approach this. Some offices have all staff trained in all functions. Other offices separate front and back office operations. The front office handles scheduling, checking in/out, etc. The back office deals with billing, coding and collections. What are the benefits and drawbacks to both set ups?

Sandra answers:

The benefits of having it seperate is that you have people who are specifically trained in one area, rather than having a group of people who are only okay at all the tasks, you have a handful of people who have a specific job and do it very well. This is especially important when it comes to coding and billing, since revenue is a cornerstone of any clinic. Generally, front desk doesn’t know enough about coding/billing to do it accurately.

The drawback is that when things are so seperate it sometimes is difficult for people to see the big picture, ie. When a receptionist doesn’t get an updated insurance card, when a claim is dropped, it will then be denied due to expired benefits, then the billing dept has to contact the patient, get the new insurance information and drop another claim. If the front desk person realized how a simple thing of not asking for insurance could create such extra work for the billing dept, they probably would be more careful. But since it is seperate, they probably have no idea the extra work they have created.

Q about 7th day adventist hospitals and church doctrine?

The adventist denomination is very well known for its chain of hospitals. Many doctors are trained in its medical schools. Question- given the fact that medical professional are assumed to get extensive training in biology, which I would gather includes evolutionary theory and genetics, is there problems with the church doctrine of young earth creationism and the six literal days?
Wouldn’t medical students and others spend at least some time learning about evolution and how the genetic code evolved over time? Would not studying biology in the absence of evolution sort of be like studying mathematics in the absence of numbers?

Sandra answers:

You must be making the assumption that Adventist medics acquire their degrees through the public system. Most would have gone through an Adventist private university for six months and then the rest of their time on campus at an Adventist teaching hospital. It is most likely that evolution would be covered there purely on a scientific level as a theory. It would certainly not be covered as scientific fact, as science itself does not treat it as such. By the same token, Adventist degrees would not bring in creation science theories either for much the same reason. As an institution that produces professional graduates they have to abide by what is required for graduation in the various professions. Generally Adventist institutions do make a clear distinction between subjects that are based on faith and ones that are based on science.

I just keep thinking to myself what if I don’t get all of this done on time.. What do I do then???? I would advise telling you psychiatrist about how you’ve been feeling, maybe even show her this question. If she’s any good she’ll be able to tell you need help.
